Institutio sui Generis: Searching for a Global Catholic University during the 1970s

This study provides a critical look at the Catholic search for global university of future during 1970s. It focuses on proposals and arguments from Canadian theologian sociologist Hervé Carrier SJ (1921–2014), who was rector Pontificia Università Gregoriana between 1966 1978. To understand his idea university, three aspects are key: firstly, French German sociologists’ postwar dialogue modern secularization; secondly, Karl Jaspers’s (1883–1969) concept unconditional truth; thirdly, lifelong education paradigm as tool regaining supposed authenticity individual, conceived prerequisite society politics. Analyzing these keys brings out evaluation limits associated with subjectivity consciousness development higher institutions.
